Spot reduction is in fact a myth. 

When you exercise fat is burned, however you can't decide where it is taken from.  Opposed to what most people believe to be true, there are no exercises that will target fat reduction in specific parts of your body. Commercials do a great job at convincing people that a product will help reduce fat from certain areas of the body, but this is just the common misconception. 

Most participants knew that fat was burned, but did not know where it went. The fact is, when you exercise fat is burned to create energy that is used by the body. 

Knowing that fat is burned for energy might help more people make sense of the fact that spot reduction is a myth.
